Women’s Equality Day August 26
August 26 marks the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote. One battle we are still waging is for women in education. AAUW estimates that due to disproportionate student loan burden and a longer debt repayment period, women currently hold almost 2/3 of student debt in the U.S.
Summer Reading Recommendation The Emerald Mile
Kevin Fedarko’s 2013 book about the speed attempt, The Emerald Mile, took a Grand Canyon campfire story and made it into a classic of adventure literature, weaving together the stories of early Grand Canyon exploration (including the Powell expeditions), the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, the history of river guiding in the Canyon, and Grua’s biography into a rich narrative. The book won a 2013 National Outdoor Book Award, made the New York Times Bestseller List in September 2014, and has put Fedarko in a role of defending the Grand Canyon as a sacred place. We chatted with him about the book, his career as a boatman, and the Grand Canyon.
June 15 AAUW Lobby Day
Last week, over 700 AAUW members had the opportunity to storm Capitol Hill for the 2017 AAUW Lobby Day. Participants told their senators and representatives to protect and strengthen Title IX and advocated for ways to lower student debt, which disproportionately impacts women. From Alaska to Arkansas, California to Connecticut, and Nebraska to New York, AAUW members were pumped and ready to take the fight for gender equity directly to Congress.
Those who weren’t in Washington, D.C. weighed in from home.
